About Southwark Cyclists

About Us

on Sun, 05/06/2011 - 12:15am

We're a very mixed group of people who believe that cycling as transport is undervalued, under used and under supported.

We are regularly consulted on cycling issues such as design of the London Cycle Network, collision remedy schemes, location of cycle racks and making sure that cycling is well represented in Southwark's bids for money from central government.

We campaign on all cycling issues in the borough, run events, cycle socially, carry out research and usually manage to have fun in the process.

Our successes are due to our very active membership but we always welcome new people. Why not give some time? There are lots of options, every little helps and support will be given. No need to commit your life away!

Or come and meet us - here are some brief notes/actions from our latest meeting.

We have a formal constitution that declares our clear mission to:

encourage more people to cycle improve conditions for cyclists raise the profile of cycling We also have a clear Equal Opportunities policy too.

The borough is large, varied and full of contrasts. Here is one view of what Cycling in Southwark is like, and some tips for cycling in London.

Benefits of joining

on Sun, 05/06/2011 - 12:16am

Join us!

Southwark Cyclists has no membership scheme as such. Anyone who shares our general views about cycling can regard themselves as a member - and especially if they come to our meetings, rides and events. Just turn up. Everyone is very welcome. If you want to help with anything at any level, even better. But no pressure. Try us.

We have a formal constitution that declares our clear mission to:

encourage more people to cycle improve conditions for cyclists raise the profile of cycling

We also have a clear Equal Opportunities policy.

We do encourage people to join the London Cycling Campaign. We are the independent borough branch of the LCC. With over 9,000 paid-up members it's the largest cycling urban group in the world. There are over 800 LCC members living in Southwark. Joining LCC not only gives that organisation more campaigning power, it also gives members their useful two-monthly magazine (into which we try and stuff our own newsletter), free third-party insurance, and a very useful 10% discount in many London bike shops. A lot of us find that that discount alone more than pays for the cost of membership.

For more information - and to join - visit the LCC website, and click to join. Choose Southwark when asked to select your borough.

Monthly Meeting

on Tue, 28/06/2011 - 6:44pm

We meet on the second Wednesday of every month from 6.30pm until 8.30pm (and are quite strict about that finish time, no later). We plan rides and events, exchange ideas, sometimes have guest speakers, talk about planning applications, whatever people want to talk about and a lot more. Notes of the meeting go onto the website soon after.

Once a year we have elections to our Committee. But while we're refreshingly unstuffy, we're quite serious...we represent well over 800 London Cycling Campaign members living in Southwark.

All are welcome provided they share our general cycling mission. Drinks option after.

The meeting place is:

Better Bankside
The Community Space
Bankside 3
Great Guildford Street/Zoar Street corner
London SE1 0TF

Quality Management Policy

on Tue, 28/06/2011 - 6:44pm

Southwark Cyclists works hard to be a high quality organisation that
gives all its members, users and other contacts a high quality service
and response.

We are all volunteers and we have no employees and so time for projects,
rides, events etc is necessarily limited. So we try and get it right
first time and every time, to save time.

We are committed to continual improvement and listen to feedback from
our users and our email list. When we organise training classes, for
example, we use feedback forms to evolve and improve what we deliver.

We work hard to promote cycling and are very aware that we are
ambassadors. That means we have a responsibility to ensure the high
quality of all we do.

We will review this policy formally once a year at our Annual Meeting.
